Glass PV modules on the fence: cheaper and better?
Per watt, glass PV modules are cheaper – that’s true. We took an honest look at everything else that counts on a fence.

What hangs on the fence – and how is it held?
The difference lies in how it’s attached and how much it weighs.
| Per fence panel (2.5 × 1.4 m) | Load on the panel | Mounting | Height | What this means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunbooster VERTICAL+6 strips | 7.2 kg no glass | threaded in like a privacy strip | 1.2 m | A uniform privacy screen at the same time. No brackets, no clamps; if a strip comes loose, it weighs 1.2 kg. |
| 1 glass PV modulelandscape | 23 kg glass | 4 clamps + bracket | 1.1 m | Covers only part of the panel: if you want full privacy, you also need a privacy screen (included in the calculator). Installation manuals usually don’t provide for clamps on a fence. |
| 2 glass PV modulesportrait | 46 kg glass | 8 clamps + bracket | 1.72 m | The whole panel becomes glass and sticks out above a 1.4 m fence. The posts of mesh panel fences are often not designed for this weight.² |
| 4 glass PV modules2 front, 2 back | over 92 kg glass | 16 clamps + brackets | 1.72 m | Hung on both sides: over 92 kg of glass on one panel. The posts of mesh panel fences are usually not designed for this; reinforcement is generally needed.² |
Fence panel 2.5 × 1.4 m (7 rows). Glass PV module approx. 1.7 × 1.1 m, around 23 kg. VERTICAL+: 6 strips of 1.2 kg each, bottom row left free.¹
And if something comes loose?
- You are liable. As the property owner under § 836 BGB in Germany and § 1319 ABGB in Austria, unless you can prove it was built professionally and inspected regularly. In Switzerland, the owner is liable under Art. 58 CO even without fault. Many other European countries have comparable rules.
- A storm is no excuse. For the Regional Court of Aurich (Germany), even hurricane-force gusts of up to 148 km/h were foreseeable (3 O 1102/16).
- Warranty and insurance. Mounting modules differently from what the installation manual allows puts the module warranty at risk. In cases of gross negligence, building or PV insurance may reduce its payout.
And what about reflections?
Vertical glass PV modules reflect a low sun back at eye level and dazzle neighbours and drivers. In Germany, reflections from PV systems count as an environmental nuisance (§ 3(2) BImSchG). The Higher Regional Court of Düsseldorf ordered an operator to stop the glare affecting his neighbour (21 July 2017, I-9 U 35/17). Sunbooster VERTICAL+ has no glass surface.
What suits you?
Glass PV modules aren’t wrong. It depends on your fence.
Glass PV modules if …
- your fence and the brackets can demonstrably carry the heavy load,
- damage to the glass can be ruled out,
- you plan the brackets and installation yourself and install with two people,
- you don’t mind adding a privacy screen for full privacy,
- glass surfaces suit your fence visually and dazzle no one.
Sunbooster VERTICAL+ if …
- you want a uniform look, without glass PV modules and their drawbacks,
- your fence should stay as it is and become a privacy screen at the same time,
- you want to install it on your own: thread in the strips, about 30 minutes per panel,
- the system should move house with you.

How we calculated
Orientation of the fence surface:
Sunbooster VERTICAL+: 6 bifacial strips of 83 Wp each per 2.5 m panel (498 Wp, 7.2 kg), ordered as a 4-panel kit including inverter at the current shop price for Germany or Austria. Yield 780 kWh per kWp and year, measured on the unshaded panels of our system in Graz (facing south-east/north-west); for east/west we use this value, for south/north 80% of it. Installation 30 minutes per panel.
Glass PV modules: one 475 Wp module per 2.5 m panel at €80 (approx. 1.7 × 1.1 m, approx. 23 kg), inverter €150 per kWp, fence bracket €50 per panel, mounting check by an expert €400. Installation 2 person-hours per panel. Glass solar fence: kit of modules and substructure, market prices €135–250 per metre, calculated with the lower value, installation 3 person-hours per panel. We calculate bifacial glass-glass modules with the same price and the same yield per kWp as VERTICAL+, but on the fence with shading of the rear side: it sits behind the bars of the fence, so we assume 85% of the light there, which means 94% of the yield on an east/west fence and 98% on a south/north fence. Because VERTICAL+ is also a privacy screen, we add privacy strips for the whole panel to glass PV modules on the fence (6 rows like VERTICAL+, €10 of material and 30 minutes of threading per panel). Monofacial modules mounted vertically only use their front side: with reference values for vertical surfaces (Fraunhofer ISE: east 50%, west 48%, south 71%, north 17% of an optimally tilted roof) and a typical bifaciality of 75%, they deliver around 58% of a bifacial module with the same output on an east/west fence and around 85% on a south/north fence. For Austria, we calculate the glass hardware with 20% VAT.
For both: electrical connection by a specialist company €500. We value installation time at €60 per hour, even if you do it yourself. Electricity price 40 ct/kWh with a 3% price increase per year, self-consumption 50%, surplus 7.7 ct/kWh (EPEX spot Germany, weighted with the feed-in profile), degradation 0.5% per year, over a period of 20 years. The payback calculator on the product page uses the same assumptions.
